Partnership With Greenridge Secondary To Spread Green Message To The Community Partnership With Greenridge Secondary To Spread Green Message To The Community |
21 July 2007
On 21 July 2007, PowerSeraya joined hands with Greenridge Secondary School to bring environmental stewardship beyond the school's boundaries and extended this to Zhenghua Community at Bukit Panjang Plaza. This was done through a public display of art works presented in various mediums such as digital art, videography and gaming by its lower secondary students at Bukit Panjang Plaza. The Green Way of Life: A Digitalised Perspective was the first of its kind for the Zhenghua community and also for Greenridge Secondary. The works on display were the outcomes of the School's Interdisciplinary Project Work approach which integrates Science, Geography, English and Digital Art to promote environmental stewardship. "The Interdisciplinary Project Work Curriculum allows our students to pick up critical and creative thinking skills through problem-based learning while equipping themselves with useful IT skills to help them stay current and relevant. Using the themes of recycling and conservation, students were challenged to present these concepts in a meaningful way. It is our belief that this experience will provide valuable learning opportunities while internalising the need to be good stewards and proactively care for the environment. The Green Way of Life provided a platform to showcase their ideas and efforts, not only do we build up the students' self esteem, it allows us , as a school, to bring the idea of environmental stewardship to the community our school resides in," explains Greenridge's Principal, Mdm Heng Sen Mee . The students had been working on these projects since the start of the school term. To further communicate The Green Way of Life theme, students built up a stage backdrop using aluminium cans, decorated the exhibition space with greenery and made programme cards from recycled cardboards. "By integrating the theme into the whole exhibition presentation, we wanted to heighten our visitors' environmental awareness as they walked through our exhibition space and view the students' efforts. Hopefully by experiencing environmental stewardship, the community will be spurred on to make it part of their lives and Go Green," explains Mrs Valerie Lim, Head of Department for Humanities at Greenridge Secondary School. The Green Way of Life was part of the Greenridge Secondary's community outreach efforts presented in partnership with PowerSeraya. "We have been able to bring the Green message to the Zhenghua community with the financial support of PowerSeraya whom we have been in partnership with since 2005," enthuses Mdm Heng. Managing Director of PowerSeraya Ltd, Neil McGregor adds, "As an Energy Company, we recognise the need to proactively minimise our impact on the environment so that it can be preserved for our children and theirs. Our involvement with Greenridge Secondary allows us to engage the community by supporting meaningful projects to increase awareness and hopefully inspire some to take bolder steps in caring for the environment." The exhibition was officiated by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West Community District Council. |
